First appearance of Rottbøll’s publication on rare plants from Suriname based on plant specimens and notes collected by Daniel Rolander, an apostle of Carl Linnaeus, during his expedition to Suriname in the mid-18th century. Rottbøll’s publication is largely based on Rolander’s unpublished Latin manuscript Diarium Surinamicum (1754–56) which wasn’t published in full until 1811. The present publications is the earliest valid publication of the genus “Nectandra”, and played a key role in resolving a nomenclatural conflict over the name “Nectandra”, which had been used earlier by Bergius for a different genus. Rottbøll’s name was later conserved (made officially valid) over Bergius's.
