Rare first appearance of White’s doctoral thesis on various functions and roles of hospitals such as such as treatment, care training and the design and layout of hospitals.

Joris White was born in 1731 in Trondheim, son of Thorsten and Ingeborg White. He studied privately, earned degrees in philosophy (1750) and theology (1752) and then turned to medicine. He trained at Frederiks Hospital and became a medical doctor in 1760. In 1761, he was appointed mining physician and lecturer in Kongsberg but died in 1765.
