Rare first complete French translation of Gracián’s vol. 1 of El Criticon first published in 1651. Various French editions were published in the end of the 17th century (París, Colombat, 1696; París, Colombat, 1697; Brussels, T’Sertstevens, 1696; Brussels, François Serstevens,; Brussels, François Foppens, 1697), all incomplete. El Criticon is considered one of the masterpieces of Spanish Baroque literature and is regarded, along with Don Quixote and La Celestina, to be one of the most influential works in Spanish literature,
This present 1705 translation is considered the best and also serves as basis for the modern reissue by Alfred Coster (1931).
