First edition of Hviid's travels in the late 1770ies. In 1777, with the patronage of Ove Høegh-Guldberg, he obtained a travel scholarship and went to Göttingen to study under Johann David Michaelis and Christian Gottlob Heyne, focusing on oriental and classical languages. During his travels, he visited Vienna where he collaborated with Archbishop Christoph Anton von Migazzi and the papal nuncio Giuseppe Garampi, gaining recommendations to Cardinal Giovanni Francesco Albani and later Cardinal Stefano Borgia. In Rome he continued his studies of biblical manuscripts and immersed himself in the study of oriental languages. He also explored Rome's art collections and became well-known among artists.
