Scarce first edition. "In the early 1770s, while still studying theology, Weber bought an electrival machine from an old-clothes peddler. The purchase showed its value in 1778 when, just after his ordination, he won the prize from the Bavarian Academy of Sciences for an 'air electrophore', an air condenser with a movable coating, whose action he explained in the modern manner, using 'atmosphere' to mean 'sphere of activity'"(J.L. Heilbron).
