First printing of the paper in which Marey formulates the law, named after him and stating that heart rate is related inversely to arterial blood pressure.

Marey contributed greatly to the development of experimental physiology. In 1860 he invented the modern sphygmograph, an instrument for recording the features of the pulse and variation in blood pressure on a graph. In 1861 he formulated Marey's law. He was the first to realize the relationship between blood pressure and heart rate.
