First publication of the influential and groundbreaking description (the detailed description including the derivation) of the Bethe-Salpeter equation. Due to its generality, it has been used in nearly all branches of theoretical physics and has been presented in many different forms. In general, the theory describes the bound states of a two-body quantum field theoretical system in a relativistically covariant formalism.

In Early 1951, Bethe and Salpeter published a paper in which they introduced the concept of the Bethe-Salpeter equation but had not made the final calculations and derivations. This paper presents the theory including the derivation and is therefore known as the first documented publication of the theory.
