First editions of these four first "Letters", by the influential Suiss Agronomer, Lullin de Chateauvieux. In their time, these letters were considered an important contribution to the analysis of contemporary affairs and economic and political thought. A fifth letter appeared in 1926, three years after the fourth.

Lullin was a correspondent of the Academy of Sciences and of central society of agriculture of France as well as of the Géorgophiles of Florence, and a member of the Society of Arts in Geneva. He has written a number of important works within the field of agricultural science (e.g. the famous "Lettres écrites d'Italie, 1812-13) and the rural condition and economy of France. In time, his focus turned to political matters, and his excellent abilities for observation, as well as his numerous relations to highly influential polititians and aristocrats, enabled him to contribute importantly to the political history of his own century. His most important work within this field is his "Lettres de Saint-James", which traces all of the opinions of the reformists; it is this work which bestowed upon him the reputation of a skilled and important historian of contemporary politics and economy.
