Lady Georgiana Charlotte Fullerton (1812-1885) was a hugely succesful English novelist, whose great novels played an important rôle in disseminating the main controversies of religious debate to the novel-reading public. This, her first novel, was written while she was still a practising Anglican. The work focuses on the issue of confession, and it was very well received. In "The English Review", Mr. Gladstone said of it: "the least didactic and the most instructive" of religious novels.
Two years after the appearnce of the novel, Lady Georgiana converted to Roman Catholocism.
