First printing of this pioneerwork on tides. Airy was awarded the medal of the Royal Society of London in 1845 "For his paper on the laws of the tides on the coast of Ireland, as inferred from extensive series of observations made in connection with the Ordinance Survey of Ireland, published in the Philosophical Transactions for the present year."
George Bidell Airy was without break astronomer Royal from 1835 to 1881, and he considerable influence on British astronomy in that periode.
