ANDERSEN, HANS CHRISTIAN.

In Spain. Translated by Mrs. Bushby.

London, Richard Bentley, 1864. Orig. red full cloth w. blindstamped borders to boards and gilt back. Upper capital somewhat worn, corners bumped, otherwise fine. Uncut. Internally nice and clean.

First English translation of "I Spanien", which originally appeared in Danish just one year earlier.
Andersen wrote the work while travelling through Spain in the year 1862, and he is said to have been so infatuated with the beautiful Spanish women that he wrote a number of poems about them, which were considered too daring at the time.
Andersen met the translator, Mrs. Bushby, the first time he visited London, in 1847. By then she had already translated some of his poems.
