First appearance of these importent papers, containing the ideas which was the foundations for his later developed theory of the electron theory of metals.

"In a series of papers (the two papers offered), and a book..., Thomson illustrated how to guess at a term in the Lagrangian from a consideration of known phenomena and how, from the term once admitted, to deduca the existence and magnitudes of other effects. he also showed that a time-average of the Lagrangian could play a part of the entropy in certain problems usually handled by the second law of thermodynamics. One of his most importent contributions in this line, was the development of of the notion, perhaps original with him, that electricity flows in much the same way in metals as in electrolytes. He was to return to this idea in founding the electron theory of metals....
