Napoleon had nominated Haüy an honorary canon of Notre Dame, in 1803 he ordered him to write a textbook of physics for the newly instituted lycées. This book was outstanding for its clear, methodological expositionof physics, although mathemaical treatment of problems was lacking. His "Traite de Physique" brought him appointment to the Legion of Hoor in 1803.
