The exceedingly rare first edition of this important and comparatively early contribution to the botanical exploration of northern Norway. Sommerfelt’s work is based on his extensive field studies in Saltdal and was intended to function as a supplement to Göran Wahlenberg’s Flora lapponica from 1812. The work list more than 700 species including numerous species newly recorded from northern Norway and several described as new to science.
Particularly noteworthy is Sommerfelt’s treatment of the cryptogamic flora, including fungi, lichens, mosses and algae. The work established Sommerfelt as one of the most important early botanical authorities on the flora of northern Norway and still remain an important source for the botanical history of the region.
