ALRIK, AKSEL.

Pedersen – Goethe. A collection of 52 fold-out drawings.

(No place, nor year, but Copenhagen first half of 20th century).

8vo-oblong (240 x 110 mm). In wrappers with "Pedersen - Goethe" in contemporary hand. Printed photograph of Alrik to front wrapper. 52 foldout cartoon, black ink on paper. Wrappers with wear, internally nice and clean.

Exceedingly rare manuscript copy of Alrik’s humorous and satirical series o “Pedersen–Goethe”. The title plays on the contrast between the very ordinary Danish surname Pedersen and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe - contrasting everyday Danish provincial life with high German culture and genius.

Axel Alrik (born Axel Jensen, changed surname to Alrik in 1917) was a Danish illustrator and artist born and died on Frederiksberg. He studied at Frede Aamodt’s drawing and painting school in Copenhagen and later at the Artists’ Model School. Alrik travelled to Germany and France on study trips during the 1920s and 1930s.
