Stahl tried to explain vital phenomena by mystical means. He was head of the so-calles Animistic School which explained disease as caused by misdirected activities on the part of the soul. He was an outstanding physician and greatly influenced German medicine. As a chemist he elaborated and maintained the theory of phlogiston.
