COSMOLOGY - "ZELDOVICH PANCAKE"

ZELDOVICH, YA. B.

Gravitational Instability: An Approximate Theory for Large Density Perturbations.

(Berlin & New York, Springer), 1970. Royal8vo. In the original blue wrappers. In "Astronomy and Astrophysics", Volume 5, No. 1, March 1970. Entire issue offered. A very fine and clean copy. Pp. 84-89. [Entire issue: (2), 170 pp].

First printing of Zeldovich's seminal paper in which he documented that gravitating bodies will collapse along each of their principal axes in succession, producing pancake-like and filament-like structures along the way, hence the "Zeldovich Pancake".

It has long been known that galaxies tend to distribute themselves in filament and pancake-like structures, but it is hard to reproduce analytically because the mathematics of non-linear gravitational collapse are tricky. Although originally created for different purposes, Zeldovich's model now provides an excellent means of deriving the initial conditions to cosmological N-Body simulations.
