WONDERFUL PRESENTATION-INSCRIPTION

ANDERSEN, H.C.

Historier. Anden Samling.

Kjøbenhavn, 1853.

Uncut in the original printed wrappers. Wrappers a bit chipped at edges and with some light damp staining. A lovely copy with Frederikke Larcher’s (1812-1892) ownership signature to top of front wrapper. 68 pp. Housed in a grey paper chemise and box, with some wear and tear.

First edition, with a lovely, poetical presentation-inscription to Frederikke Larcher, signed "H.C. Andersen": "Jeg lægger min bouquet paa Scenens Bræt/ De selv gjør Indtryk af en frisk Bouquet" (own translation: "I put my bouquet on the board of the stage/ you yourself make the impression of a fresh bouquet").

First edition, in splendid condition, with the original printed wrappers (a small tear and minor wear), of the second part of Andersen's "Story"-collection, containing first printings of four of his famous fairy-takes, namely: Hjertesorg, (Heart Ache) "Alt paa sin rette Plads!" (Everything in its proper place), Nissen hos Spekhøkeren (The Goblin at the Grocer), Under Piletræet (Under the Willow Tree).

As the presentation-inscription indicates, Frederikke Larcher (1812-1892) was a stage actress. She was known as both beautiful, bright, and ambitious, and she made an excellent career for herself. She made her debut in 1827, at the age of 15, at the Royal Theatre, and from the very beginning, she impressed everyone with her clear and sonorous voice as well as her confident and clear technique.

She ended her career in 1857, where she stood on the stage one last time, performing the role of Leonora in the popular play "Henrik og Pernille" – a role she had played for the first time 20 years earlier.

Andersen might have given the little book as a gift upon FL's last performance. The inscription is quite touching, as it alludes to the fact that although she was at the end of her career, she was still "as a fresh bouquet", perhaps even in the same role that she had played 20 years earlier. And putting "a bouquet at the board of the scene" might very well allude to a gesture for a final act.
