La Haye, Jean & Daniel Steucker, 1675. 12mo. Bound in an exquisite early 19th century full calf binding with elegant gilding, five raised bands and gilt title to spine. Black single line-borders to boards, edges of boards gilt, and inner gilt dentelles. All edges gilt. (Signed Thouvenin, in gold lettering to the spine). Slight wear to hinges and corners. Internally nice and clean. (8), 208 pp + 8 folded engraved plates.
First edition of this anonymously published work, of which the dedication to the king is signed Al.-C. de Mestre. A scond edition of the work appeared in 1968.
The lovely binding is by the renowned French bookbinder Joseph Thouvenin (1791-1834), who is famous for reviving the fanfare-binding.
