Small paper-label pasted on to top of spines. Wear to extremities. Boards with scratches and parts of the gilt ornamentation worn off. Spine-ends chipped. Title-page in vol. 1 with red underlinings but internally generally nice and clean. (26), 582 pp. + frontispiece; (12), 623 pp.

Jules Mazarin (born Giulio Raimondo Mazzarino or Mazarini; 1602 – 1661), later known as Cardinal Mazarin from 1641, was an Italian Catholic prelate, diplomat and politician who served as chief minister to French kings Louis XIII and Louis XIV from 1642 until his death. As the de facto ruler of France for nearly 20 years, Mazarin played a pivotal role in shaping the Westphalian principles which influenced European foreign policy and the global order.
