4to. In contemporary full calf with four raised bands with blindstamped ornamentation to spine. Wear to extremities, wormholes to boards, missing lower outer corner of front board and head and foot of spine with loss of leather. Part 1 with small wormtracts in inner margin, light foxing throughout. 4 leaves with repairs to upper margin. (16), 670, 813, (1) pp.
Exceedingly rare first edition of Schmuck’s interpretation and exposition of the Exodus. The work is of the utmost scarcity, we have not been able to locate a single copy at auction and OCLC only list one copy (Herzog August Bibliothek, Germany). Vincentius Schmuck (1565-1628) was the son of a councilor and printer and his mother was the granddaughter of Caspar Müller, a friend of Luther. He studied at the Henneberg Gymnasium and later in Leipzig, where he remained his whole life. In 1586, he became a Master and focused on theology. He taught at the Nicolai School from 1589, became its co-rector in 1591, and an adjunct of the philosophical faculty in 1592. Chosen as deacon of the Nicolai Church in 1593, he became archdeacon in 1594, Licentiate of Theology in 1602, pastor and theology professor in 1604, Doctor of Theology and canon of Zeitz in 1606, and superintendent in 1617.
