RARE WORK ON GARDEN DESIGN

STIEGLITZ, CHRISTIAN LUDWIG.

Gemählde von Gärten, im neuern Geschmack.

Leipzig, Voss und Compagnie, 1798.

4to (200 x 150 mm). In a very nice recent half calf pastiche binding with gilt lettering and ornamentation to spine. Internally with a few occassional brownspots, overall a very nice copy. VIII, 132 pp. + 28 plates (complete).

The very rare first edition of Stieglitz’ influential work on garden design in which he ridiculed the formality of the French and Dutch garden designs and praised those of the German and English.
The text discusses a shift in garden design philosophy moving away from rigid, geometric forms towards a more natural style that allows plants to grow freely. It contrasts the previous styles, which imposed strict shapes and structures on nature, with a contemporary preference for a more organic approach.
This present first edition was published in verses, subsequent editions and French and English translations were published in prose.

Christian Ludwig Stieglitz (1756–1836) was a German jurist and architectural historian from Leipzig. His work significantly influenced the study and practice of architecture and gardening in the early 19th century.
Stieglitz was a key figure in the early Neo-Gothic movement and provided one of the first comprehensive overview of medieval German architecture, aiding the rediscovery of Gothic style and contributing to the growing Neo-Gothic revival. Furthermore he influenced the development of the English Garden in Leipzig by incorporating the Gothic Gate as an ornamental feature, reflecting his interest in integrating architectural elements into landscape design.
