Heiberg, with reverence and friendship from the author'). Slightly browned, otherwise clean. (8),263 pp.
A beautiful copy of the scarce first edition of Martensen's 'Sermons'. Hans Lassen Martensen (1808-1884) was professor at the University of Copenhagen and Bishop of the Diocese of Zealand. Strongly influenced by Schleiermacher and Hegel, Martensen was one of leading theologians of 19th century Denmark. The thoughts expounded in 'Sermons' led to his main work 'Christian Dogmatics', published two years later and translated into English in 1874. Martensen's thoughts on religion led to an extensive scholarly debate on the relationship between faith and knowledge. The copy is inscribed to the prominent actress and author Johanne Louise Heiberg, born Pätges (1812-1890). In 1831 Johanne married the prominent critic and playwright Johan Ludvig Heiberg (1791-1860). Together the couple became two of the leading figures of the Golden Age.
