First edition of Crasset’s work on the Oracle Sibyl.
Jean Crasset, a 17th-century French Jesuit, is known for his writings on asceticism and philosophy. Among his numerous works is the present "Dissertation on the Oracles of Sibyl." At the close of the 17th century, various treatises on the Sibylline Oracles emerged often emphasizing their pagan origins. Crasset, however, strongly believed that the Sibylline Oracles were divine utterances of the Greek prophetess Sibyl. He aimed to demonstrate that these oracles were false Christian narratives while defending early church fathers who asserted their authenticity.
