The scarce first edition of Ibsen's magnum opus, one of the most widely performed Norwegian plays of all time. Primarily due to the present work, which was originally performed, to the music of Edvard Grieg, in 1876, Ibsen is widely regarded as "the father of realism" and as one of the founders of Modernism in theatre.

On November 14, 1867, the first edition of a print run of 1.250 copies appeared. This first edition sold out quickly, and two weeks later, a second issue, of 2.000 copies, appeared.
