Kiøbenhavn, 1807. Small 8vo. Bound in a contemporary half calf binding with gilt spine. Leather title-lable with gilt title to spine. Spine somewhat worn. Corners slightly bumped. Some brownspotting, especially to the first few leaves.

The very rare first printing of the first volume of Peter Foersom's (and P.F. Wulf's) translation of Shakespeare's tragic works (usually it is found in the second, revised edition from 1811). This volume contains the first Danish translation of Julius Cæsar and the second Danish translation of Hamlet. Hamlet has previously been translated into Danish and printed in 1777, as the only one of Shakespeare's works to appear in Danish before the present work.

The present translation of Shakespeare's works is considered the most important in Danish literature and became the standard version of the works.

The copy previously belonged to the renowned Danish literary historians Paul V. Rubow and Mogens Brøndsted.
