Rumford's paper was published the same year in "Philosophical Transactions". His experiments with heat tried to show that heat is not a material substance, are famous episodes in the history of physics as they gave the death blow to the so-called caloric theory of heat.

The volume contains also WILLIAM HERSCHEL "On the nature and Construction of the Sun and Fixed Stars", pp. 114-123 a. 222-232, originally published in the "Transactions" in 1794.
