Rare offprint issue of Weaver's early paper on the importance of the awareness of probability in science. Weaver is widely recognized as one of the pioneers of machine translation, and as an important figure in creating support for science in the United States.
Along with communication, Weaver's greatest personal research interest lay with the mathematical theory of probability. It was his belief that all scientists are deeply concerned with probability. For a vast range of cases in which it is entirely impossible for science to answer the question 'Is this statement true?' Probability theory does furnish the basis for judgment as to how likely it is that the statement is true.
