"The first successfull application of the new electron theory of atomic structure was made by Kossel, who explained the nature of inorganic, polar bonds. A similar explanation was offered by G.N. Lewis at about the same time, and he extended and theory to non polar bonds, or covalent links, as they came to be called. Langmuir further developed this aspect of the theory. The work of Kossel, Lewis and Langmuir...laid the foundations for all later theories of molecular structure."
