The work was first published in Russia in 1763, and in 1765 published in three different places in Europe. This fundamental work was written at the height of Voltaire's famous fight to "écraser l'Infame", which denoted fanatism, superstition and intolerance; it also symbolized Christianity, which he considered the most barbaric and cruel of all religions.
