Stuttgart, 1839 - 52. 8vo. Seven volumes in orig.(?)/ cont. yellow cardboard-bdgs. the last three different from the first four. Bdgs. worn, especially capitals and hinges. Bad repairs to volume one and two. Internally a bit of brownspotting, but fairly good.

First edition of the famous and inevitable "Pauly", -an essential encyclopedic work of the classics. The absolute standard reference work which now comprises 83 volumes. This first edition is not common and gives an unusual insight into the development of this sort of encylcopaedic work as well as into the study of classics in the mid 19th century.
