FIRST PUBLICATION OF THE RASTER SCAN.

GRAY, FRANK & PIERRE MERTZ.

A Theory of Scanning and Its Relation to the Characteristics of the Transmitted Signal in Telephotography and Television.

New York, American Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1934. 8vo. Original full blue cloth. The entire volume XIII, 1934 of The Bell System Technical Journal. Library stamp to free front end-paper. Binding tight and clean. Internally also very nice and clean. Pp. 464-515. [Entire volume: (8), 705 pp.].

First edition of this classic paper on the mathematics behind the raster scan; the rectangular pattern of image capture and reconstruction in television.
The mathematical theory of image scanning was developed in detail using Fourier transform techniques in the present paper.

"By the use of a two-dimensional Fourier analysis of the transmitted picture a theory of scanning is developed and the scanning system related to the signal used for the transmission. On the basis of this theory a number of conclusions can be drawn." (From the introduction to the present paper).
